Scrollwork

Ornamental design has been a defining feature of Russ Abbott’s tattoo work for over two decades. His journey with these intricate patterns began in the late ‘90s, when bold, graphic “tribal” designs were at their peak. Over time, his focus evolved toward the elegant, flowing forms of ornamental scrollwork—often misnamed as "filigree." Abbott prefers the term "scrollwork" due to its deep roots in art history, spanning from ancient Greece to the Baroque, Gothic, and Art Nouveau periods. Typically inspired by the acanthus plant, scrollwork creates dynamic, spiraling designs that serve as a striking framing element for tattoo compositions.

This gallery offers a retrospective of Abbott’s career, featuring tattoos created as early as 2012 alongside his most recent work. For those interested in working with him, please note that he primarily focuses on large-scale projects such as full arm and leg sleeves, full back or front pieces, and full-body suits. Special exceptions are sometimes made for returning clients or unique concepts that align with his artistic vision. If that sounds like you, submit a booking request to start the conversation.
